WHAT IS CHAPTER AT LARGE?
New Zealand has Chapter at Large (CAL) members all over the country. CAL members are no longer affiliated with, nor a member of any particular chorus, but retain full membership with Sweet Adelines International. CAL members pay both International and Regional dues. Dues are invoiced annually. CAL members have varied and interesting reasons for choosing the CAL membership status. Sometimes they live in a geographical area that is not conveniently located near a chorus, they may be taking time out of chorus life to pursue other interests, have children, or simply not be in a position to commit to chorus life at the moment. Whatever the reason, CAL members are part of the SANZ sisterhood and retain the benefits of educational opportunities offered within our Region. Taking up CAL status can, especially at first, seem somewhat empty, especially after being part of a chorus, but a CAL member comes to realise that subsequent decisions about where and how much to be involved are her own, and that what she decides can affect the enjoyment of her continued Sweet Adeline life.
Opportunities for involvement abound and through taking up one or some of these opportunities a CAL member can maintain her interest and joy through being part of the Sweet Adeline sisterhood and through doing the things she is most interested in. Opportunities and Benefits Chapter–at-Large members can –
- Sing in a registered quartet and compete within it at Contest
- Sing in an unregistered quartet for fun and without competing
- Affiliate with a chartered chorus in another Region and compete within it
- Purchase music at the low cost offered to members.
- [At the discretion of the Musical Director] join a chorus for coaching either with the chorus or within a quartet
- Sing with the Star Chorus at contest
- Help with the YSIH programme either as a coach, administrator or wherever needed
- Vote on international and regional matters as they are put to members
- Become a member of the Regional Governance Team
- Receive the Pitchpipe and Addaline magazines, plus all communications relevant to CAL
Chapter-at-Large members cannot compete within a chorus in their own region unless they join a chorus or form or perform as a Chapter-at-Large chorus.
Member-at-large is another alternative membership option and some (but not all) choruses also provide the option of Associate Membership.
MEMBER-AT-LARGE (MAL) Members at Large are affiliated with, and pay dues to, the International organisation. They are not affiliated with a Chapter or Region and are not required to pay Regional dues. International dues are invoiced yearly. Opportunities and Benefits Members-at-Large can –
- Purchase music at low cost
- [At the discretion of the Musical Director] join a chorus for coaching either with the chorus or within a non-Sweet Adelines quartet
- Help with the Young People in Harmony programme either as a coach, administrator or wherever needed.
- Vote on international and regional matters as they are put to members.
- Receive the Pitchpipe and Addaline magazines, plus all communications relevant to MAL
A Member-at-Large may not compete or perform with a chartered chorus or quartet.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER Associate membership is for members who can't make a regular commitment to meet chorus rehearsal requirements. Except for not being able to perform or compete in a Sweet Adeline Chorus, they hold all other privileges (as determined by the individual chorus)
